A Moody High School Student Displays Numerous Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Therapist
Stephen was a seventeen year old high school junior who was displaying numerous alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to come back to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school expulsion to his Mom and Dad. His Mother and Father were "relatively conservative" and told Stephen that getting kicked out of school was not a satisfactory educational option. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his ankles that might inhibit his educational aspirations for the remainder of his adult life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were extremely disappointed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.
It was evident that his Mom and Dad were out and out in full concurrence with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his discussion with his Mother and Father, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his third period class.
When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of concern by the school administrators.
Quite sincerely, Stephen wondered why the principal informed him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? In view of the fact that almost all of his pals drink about as much as he does, basically, drinking shouldn't be such a big deal. Stated more directly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to short-circuit his ability to act like an accountable young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your pals drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's right for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was very well prepared for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that listed different drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied principally to teenagers.
After Miss Pender listed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was obvious that what Miss Pender made known to Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the short term and the long term results of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also made the effort to demonstrate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and principally to underage drinkers.
Certainly, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantaneously understood why he should not be engaging in hazardous and abusive drinking with or without his classmates anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
