I love to read, but find it difficult to fit in some quiet time on a consistent basis. I'm generally far too busy with my job and my home life to sit down with a book. Then I saw a web-based ad for a site that sells whole books on cd, and I clicked through to look it over. They offered a free trial download, which I took advantage of. I loved it! Rather than having to find additional time to read, I could now simply listen to a book while commuting back and forth from work.
After that original trial, I started looking at ways to get more complete audio books on CD. Becoming a full member at a site like Audible.com is one option, but I did not wish to lock myself into paying $15 or more each month for audio books on CD. For those that can afford it, Audible is an exceptional choice. They have a gigantic selection of complete audio books on CD, including a large number of new releases from the most popular writers around. The interface for downloading looks to be easy enough to use, and the files can be played on any digital music competitor available to buy. But as I said, I did not want to pay for a membership, so I kept looking.
I then found a web site called Libras which offers free full-length audio-books that anyone can get without paying one dime. The catch is that they only deal with periodicals that are in the public domain (meaning titles which are more than 75 years old) and the works are read by volunteers. If you like reading classics and don't mind the wildly varying degree of skill among the people who volunteer, then this would be a good alternative to joining a pay-to-listen program.
The best source of free full-length audio books ended up to be my local public library. My valid membership card allows me to "borrow" full-length audio books for either two or three weeks, after which time the mp3s expire and can no longer be played. Two to three weeks is a great deal of time to get through a single book, so I have never had an issue with the time limit. Also, I don't mind that I can't use the files over after the lending period expires. It is not just as if there are many titles out there that I would listen to over and over again.
Now that I'm getting free whole books on tape from my library, my daily commute has become more productive and enjoyable than ever. I really like being able to simply sit there and be entertained by hearing a good story as I drive.
