Making The World A Better Place Means Converting Your Own Character Inside And Altering Your Actions
When Mahatma Gandhi said "we must be the change we wish to see on the planet," he may not have realized how many individuals would be encouraged by his brave words. If anybody had the right to say such a thing, it was Gandhi. He was so determined to make his country free of English rule that he was willing to go through torture, threats, and abject poverty just to bring changes to the world. Although his words have been somewhat diluted by their worldwide recognition, they still strike people nowadays. As success quotes go, it is one of the more encouraging ones. Particularly to people that enjoy motivational and success quotes, it's powerful. Even the tacky "be the change" bumper stickers might, sometimes, make people stop and contemplate, as all the best success quotes do.
Stopping and thinking, however, was not all that Mahatma Gandhi had in mind. Just pondering changing the world doesn't truly do anything to help anybody. In an effort to be the change, you must be willing to give up everything including your sense of identity. You must attach yourself to your beliefs so that there isn't any difference between your ideas and actions. This is what it takes to be the change.
Even though Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" oration is more popular, Mahatma Gandhi's words seem to have inspired a far greater range of causes. Now days, people use the expression "be the change" to express support for Healthcare reform, urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and many other causes. Essentially, everyone who is out there trying to make the world a better place can, to a larger or smaller degree, link their struggle to these well-known words.
Most of the leaders, young and old, who are really working to make the world a better place are not very flashy about it. Typically, the people you see running for political office or sporting political pins and bumper stickers are not the ones who are really out there, day after day, doing the work. The true heroes are often unknown. Even though everybody has heard of Gandhi, few people are aware of many of the other activists who were also trying to get the British out of India. They were satisfied to work in obscurity, hoping that someday their dreams of freedom would come to pass.
It doesn't matter what you are striving for. If it is important enough for you to surrender a safe, secure life to work for change, it has value. Do not fret about being recognized for what you do. It is enough to "be the change" and let the community feel your compassion.
