Parenting is a difficult and demanding job. It's also a job that you can not retire from. Even when your children are grown, living by themselves & making a living, you still feel a sense of responsibility and a need to give advice. We have found that our children are once again interested in our input. For a few years any-thing that we said held little or no value to our kids but now that they have finished college and are taking on more responsibility for themselves they're eager for advice - you can give them good advice on a plethora of economic topics, like how to get rid of debt.
Our oldest son is very independent. We never had to help him get rid of debt. He has always been such the quite hard worker & is the most thrifty of our children - that's why getting rid of debt was never an issue. He liked to save money and is a great comparison shopper. He has not ever been one that has felt that it is important to have brand name clothing or shoes. He has an extremely practical side to him. Due to this I was shocked when he informed me that he wanted to buy a new vehicle. He has always been the one to speak about how rapidly new motor vehicles depreciate and how you never make-up for that depreciation. When I brought that up to him he said that he did not care. He is making a great income & he has scrimped and saved his entire life, so he wants to purchase a new car as a treat for the hard work he has done. He said that he knows that whenever he decides to get married & to establish a family he may not be able to afford to purchase a new car so he wants to do it now.
I told my husband about the conversation I had with our son. My spouse was disappointed that our son would go into debt for a brand-new car. He thought there were other ways he could spend his money. I told my husband that at first I felt the same way, but then I remember the first and only brand-new motor vehicle that I purchased. It was amusing to know that I was driving a car that nobody else had driven. Once we were married and started our family we couldn't afford a new vehicle, we always bought program automobiles to get a better value & additional apparatus. After listening to me my husband agreed that everyone should own at least one new car in their life time.
A couple of weeks went by before our son drove up to our home in his brand-new motor vehicle. He chose to purchase a new car that's a hybrid. He is getting fantastic gas mileage and the vehicle has a nice sporty feel & look to it. He said that the reports are favorable for the car to hold its re-sale value, and there are enough of the hybrids on the road so most of the bugs have been worked through. It is neat to see how proud he is of his aptitude to buy a brand-new car and save money at the fuel pumps.
