Work was starting to be too frantic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Even though he had only been on the police force for two years, he was already known as a hard worker who almost never declined working overtime. As a matter of fact, he was now working fifteen to twenty hours of overtime each week and, consequently, he felt like he was losing his handle on his personal life. What complicated the situation was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after his shift.

Clearly Lonnie was in a rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie truly observed alcohol related difficulties and alcoholism signs, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn't really a complainer, but she frequently asked him to stay at home more with the family rather than going through all of his money while drinking with his friends.

In his heart of hearts, it was obvious to Lonnie that his excessive and hazardous drinking was adversely affecting his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work. So one Wednesday morning Lonnie made up his mind to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected.

Lonnie mentioned to Richard how abusive and unhealthy drinking was adversely affecting his health, work, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. Richard articulated to Lonnie that he completely understood because around seven years ago, he too got involved in irresponsible drinking. In point of fact Richard stated to Lonnie that abusive and unhealthy drinking can create so many problems in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Richard recommended that Lonnie schedule an appointment with an alcohol abuse specialist at the work-affiliated alcohol treatment center.

Since his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this treatment clinic, it was not only convenient but also quite affordable to seek guidance about his irresponsible drinking. And since the staff at the substance abuse rehabilitation facility was non-judgmental, competent, and supportive, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol rehabilitation that was doable and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his psychologist about how his drinking was ruining his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work, Lonnie realized that he was burning the candle at both ends with his excessive work hours and his excessive and hazardous drinking. Once he realized that he was digging himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his therapist, and after twenty weeks in rehab, he was eventually able to stop drinking and quit working overtime.

The result was that Lonnie perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery and took the time to learn more relevant alcoholism facts. Simply put, due to his alcohol counseling he not only felt better and more healthy, but he had more quality time to spend with his family, he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, and he noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only beginning to save some money for a different house but he also felt more energized and alert than anytime since he and his wife were married.
